Gigres: A Bold Handwritten Display Font for Branding

It was one of those quiet mornings, the kind where the coffee is still warm and the brand board is blank. I opened a new project, and instead of reaching for my usual go-to fonts, I decided to test something different—Gigres. This cool and unique handwritten display font had caught my eye, and I wanted to see how it would hold up in real branding work.

First Impressions and Visual Personality

Gigres has that unmistakable charm of a handwritten typeface, but with a level of polish that makes it feel professional. The strokes are bold and confident, with subtle variations that give it a natural, almost organic flow. It’s not just a script—it’s a statement. The letterforms have a playful yet daring energy that feels perfect for projects that want to stand out.

When I first placed it on a logo draft, I was struck by how it immediately added character. It didn’t feel too casual or too formal; it found that sweet spot between approachable and edgy. The personality of Gigres leans toward creativity and individuality, making it ideal for brands that want to express uniqueness without sacrificing professionalism.

Testing Gigres in Real Branding Applications

I tested Gigres across several branding elements to see how it performed in different contexts. On a packaging mockup for a boutique skincare line, it worked beautifully as a headline. The font’s visual weight gave the product a sense of luxury, while its handwritten nature added an artisanal touch. It felt like the perfect match for a brand that values authenticity and craftsmanship.

On a business card design, I used Gigres for the name and paired it with a clean sans serif for the supporting text. The contrast made the card feel dynamic and balanced. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it definitely made the recipient pause and take notice.

For a social media layout, I applied Gigres to a call-to-action button. The font’s boldness made the text pop against a muted background, which helped increase engagement. It also worked well on Instagram posts and website headers, adding a sense of movement and energy to otherwise static designs.

Where Gigres Shines and Where It Might Fall Short

Gigres is best suited as a display font, headline font, or accent font. Its style doesn’t lend itself well to long paragraphs or small body text. Using it in these situations could lead to readability issues, especially at smaller sizes. That said, when used appropriately, it can elevate the visual hierarchy and make key messages more memorable.

Projects that require a more formal or corporate tone might not be the best fit for Gigres. It’s not a font that screams “trustworthy” or “established.” Instead, it speaks to creativity, innovation, and a willingness to take risks. If your brand identity aligns with these values, then Gigres could be a great addition to your toolkit.

Font Pairing and Practical Considerations

When pairing Gigres with other fonts, I found that a clean sans serif like Helvetica Neue or a modern serif like Playfair Display complemented it well. The contrast between the handwritten and structured fonts created a nice balance, especially in editorial design or packaging layouts.

It’s also worth noting that Gigres comes with a range of styles and alternates, giving you flexibility in how you use it. However, before using it in client work, always check the commercial licensing terms. Ensuring you have the right permissions to use the font in print, digital, or merchandise is crucial to avoid any legal issues down the line.

If you’re considering Gigres for your next project, I recommend testing it in a variety of formats and sizes. See how it looks on a shop sign, product label, or printed card. Sometimes a font that works well on screen doesn’t translate perfectly to print, and vice versa.

In the end, Gigres is more than just a font—it’s a creative tool that can help shape the identity of a brand. Whether you're designing a logo, packaging, or social media assets, this handwritten display font brings a fresh perspective that’s both bold and daring. Just remember to use it wisely, and let it speak for the kind of brand you want to create.
